ローゼンメイデン

先日，本屋で見かけて表紙買いし，続編だということを知って取り憑かれたように前作も買い求めた本作，「ローゼンメイデン」。ようやく読み終わったので，今回はこれのレビューでも。

「まきますか　まきませんか」

引きこもりの中学生「桜田ジュン」，彼の許に届いた一通のダイレクトメール。これに書かれていたこの問いに彼が気まぐれに答えるところから，物語は動き出します。
「まいた世界」のジュンに届けられた，革製の大きな鞄。中には赤いドレスに身を包んだ，とても美しいアンティークドール。これがローゼンメイデンの第５ドールにして本編のヒロイン格，「真紅」です。可憐な容姿と気高い魂。何事にも動じないその性格と，状況を的確に読み取る判断力とで，「私は私なりのやり方でアリスゲームを制する」とし，自分の許に集った姉妹達のリーダー的存在となります。

ところで，彼女たち「ローゼンメイデン」は，至高の少女「アリス」となって製作者である「お父様」に逢うため，ドールの魂とも言うべき「ローザミスティカ」を奪い合う「アリスゲーム」という名の闘いの中に身を置いています。これに勝ち，「ローザミスティカ」をすべて集めると，「アリス」になれる，と言う。
この「アリスゲーム」をはじめ，物語中で真紅のライバルとして描かれているのが，第１ドール「水銀燈」。その知名度の高さは，これを読む以前の私でも知っていたほどであり，これを読むまで彼女が主役の話だとばかり思っていました。しかしなるほど，人気が高いのも頷けます。真紅が正統派の女王様的カリスマ気質だとすれば，こちらは悪の華の魅力全開の孤高の一輪。それでいて，第一期の全般に渡って描かれる，契約者「めぐ」と心を通わせるに至る過程は，不思議な清潔感に包まれたとても清廉なものでした。

第一期の中盤頃から真紅の前に姿を見せ，クライマックスから第二期に至るくだりで「まいた世界」のジュンを助けるなど，縁の下の活躍をしているらしいのが第２ドール「金糸雀」。口癖「～かしら」が可愛らしいドジっ娘です。
しかしながらその能力は未知数で，雛苺のローザミスティカを巡ってはバイオリンの音符を駆使した技で真紅を翻弄する実力の持ち主。第二期では未だ姿を見せていませんが，雪華綺晶の罠から逃れている唯一のドールとして，キーパーソンとなる活躍を期待します。

真紅サイドのドールとして，序盤からずっと好位置につけているのが第３ドール「翠星石」。鞄に乗っていきなりジュンの部屋に降ってくるという，とてつもなくインパクトのある登場をした彼女ですが，印象的なオッドアイに加え「おどおどした振る舞いが可愛らしいなぁ」と思っていたら，いきなり毒を吐き始め，回を重ねる毎に地が出てきたようで毒舌連発w
真紅相手に「嘘つきやがれです」とか，こういうキャラに成長するとは思っていなかっただけに，まぁびっくりしました。そういう明け透けなところが好まれるのか，とある人気投票では１位に輝いたとか。

翠星石の双子の妹にして庭師姉妹の片割れが，第４ドール「蒼星石」。少年と見紛う容姿と，大変に真摯な性格の持ち主です。マスターの望みと自らの望みを重ね，それを叶えるために翠星石と対峙する。双子であるが故の愛憎を自らの「庭師の鋏」で断ち斬らんとするその様はとても潔く，全ドール中最も気に入っていたのに，あぁ…。
是非とも彼女のローザミスティカを取り戻すべく，頑張るです翠星石！

真紅の最初の仲間(?)が，第６ドール「雛苺」。
第一期通してのマスコットキャラ的位置づけだったのに，終盤では雪華綺晶に身体を奪われ，第二期においては雪華綺晶のボディとされてしまう哀しいさだめを負ったドールです。
一方，自らの意志でローザミスティカを真紅に託し，金糸雀を真紅に傾倒させるのに一役買うなど，重要な役割を担っています。第二期でも，真紅が「まかなかった世界」でレプリカの身体で活動している間，真紅の真の身体を保護しているなど，真紅にとって無くてはならないパートナーとなっています。

以上の６体のドールが目下対峙している最大の敵が，第７ドール「雪華綺晶」。他のドールとは違う概念で作成された，実体を持たない「アストラルのドール」という設定です。
実体を与えられなかったことが，逆に彼女をして実体を渇望させ，第二期の第二巻では狂おしいほどに哀しい存在へと昇華しています。容姿も言動も持てる能力も，存在すべてが狂気に彩られた哀れな彼女ですが，不思議と憎みきれない哀しきボスキャラです。「ぼくの地球を守って」の小林輪に通じるものがありますね。


そうそう，「週刊ヤングジャンプ」で連載中の第二期は，第一期の続編にして「まかなかった世界」のジュンが主人公です。「分岐してしまったパラレルワールド」との位置付けなのでしょうが，面白いですねぇこういう設定。これを際限なく膨らませていくと，「時代を超えて存在している「お父様」ことローゼンの正体は，実は桜田ジュンなのでは？」という仮定が生まれますが，それは追々語られていくことでしょう。

第二期第二巻は，真紅・水銀燈の共闘ペアと雪華綺晶の戦闘中に，またしても鞄に乗って翠星石が落下してくるところで終了しています。埃にまみれて「翠星石，ここに見参！」と意気込む姿は，「姉妹達の中でも特に臆病で人見知り」と紹介されていたドールと同一人物とはちょっと思えませんが，次第に役者が揃ってきて楽しみな限りです。

Neither Vogue nor any other Cond Nast publications reviewed Weisberger’s book. When the film was released, The New Yorker ran a review that disparaged the novel in comparison. The New York Times’ Janet Maslin avoided mentioning Wintour’s name in one of the paper’s two negative reviews of the book. Its favorable notice of the movie mentioned neither Vogue nor Wintour.
