発達したMMORPGの世界を舞台とした本シリーズ，第３巻。第２巻が第１巻を補完する内容だったのに対し，本巻は純粋に第１巻の続編という位置付けです。しかしながら，主要な登場人物の一人「ユイ」の設定や，今巻のメインヒロインに据えられている主人公の妹「直葉」についてなど，当然ですが第２巻を既読であることが前提として描かれています。
また，本作は基本的に主人公「キリト」視点で描かれてきたのですが，今巻は殆どが「直葉」視点。キリトくんは強すぎるから，物語にアクセントを持たせるためにはちょっと下から見上げるくらいが読んでいる方も盛り上がりますよね。

さて，では以下は，例によってネタバレ注意でお願いいたします。

本作の主人公「キリト」こと桐ヶ谷和人には，第１巻～第２巻を通じてアスナという滅法美人の恋人が居ますが，彼女がリアルの婚約者「須郷伸之」の罠によってこれまでとは別のゲーム「アルヴヘイム・オンライン」内にその意識を捕らわれている状態で，物語はスタート。今回は，これまでと違ってリアルと仮想空間を行き来しながら進行していく形となります。

そして登場，和人の妹「直葉」。正確には実の妹ではなく従姉妹なのですが，幼少の頃からそのことを知らされずに兄妹のように育ってきており，２年前の「SAO（ソードアート・オンライン）事件」の折に直葉は初めてその事実を知らされます。以降，直葉の想いは和人を兄と慕うそれとは別のものへと昇華して行き，和人がのめり込んだオンラインゲームの世界を知りたくて，和人がSAO事件に飲み込まれた約１年後に「アルヴヘイム・オンライン（略称「ALO」）」というVRMMOを始めます。ALO内での直葉のキャラクター名は，「リーファ」。

一方，主人公の和人は，SAOで出会った仲間の協力を得て，アスナによく似たキャラクターがALO内に幽閉されていることを知ります。確信を得るため，そして恋人アスナの意識を取り戻すため，再びVRMMOに「キリト」としてログインする和人。しかし，そこでちょっと理解できない現象が起きました。キリトのSAOに於ける最終パラメータが，ALOに引き継がれている!?　所持アイテムや所持金も残っているようですが…文字化けして理解不能なアイテムの中に，一つだけ。「MHCP001」という，アルファベットの文字列がありました。
それこそは，第２巻でオブジェクト化したユイの心。ユイによると，SAOとALOは基本のシステムに共通のものを使用しているため，その原因は不明ながら移行出来るパラメータを移行したらしいことが判りました。
理由はともあれ，強い味方を得たキリト。ALO内で「ナビゲーション・ピクシー」として実体化したユイは，以後ALO内に於けるキリトのヘルプ機能として，また高い索敵能力を有する優秀なレーダー役として，行動を共にしていくこととなります。

こうして同じサーバー内で，キリトとリーファは出会います。二人はそれぞれ和人と直葉だと知らないまま助け合い，キリトの目的であるアスナの救出に向けて冒険を続けて行きますが，その過程でリーファは無鉄砲ながら腕の立つキリトに次第に惹かれていきます。リアルでもバーチャルでも，和人に惹かれる直葉。後書きで川原礫先生もおっしゃるように，今回もいろんなタイプの美少女が登場しますが，直葉／リーファも快活で魅力的なキャラクターで，今巻のヒロイン役として申し分ありません。他に，アスナのALO内での姿「ティターニア」も良かったですが，エルフの領主サクヤ様も，今後の活躍に期待です＾＾

システム面では，ALO特有の機能である飛翔能力は，今回特筆すべきところでしょう。これを用いたALOならではの戦略や戦闘は，川原先生の筆力の見せどころ。また，SAOにはなかった側面として魔法の存在があり，これも是非ともストーリーに有効に活用していただきたいと願う次第です。

「アクセル・ワールド」第３巻と同様に，次巻への続編となっておりますが，希望の持てる終わり方となっており，「アクセル・ワールド」よりは遥かに次を楽しみに待てる形となっています。


さて，次巻以降の期待について。
アスナについては，特に心配していません。表紙の帯では「早く助けに来て，キリトくん」とか殊勝なことを言っていますが，黙って助けられるのを待っていられるキャラではないですし，本巻で既に行動を起こしてさえいますしね。
目下の心配は，和人／キリトに心惹かれる直葉／リーファの恋の行方。キリトにはアスナが居ることですし，神（作者様）に守られた（と思われる）アスナが，妹キャラに負けるとはちょっと現時点では考えられません。
更なる続刊もあることでしょうし，どの様なポジションに落ち着くのか。楽しみですね！
